Pieter P. Bottelier, Ph.D.
Dr. Pieter Bottelier is a renowned economist and China scholar. He has been a senior adjunct Professor at John’s Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) since 1999, and also serves as senior advisor on China to The Conference Board.
Dr. Bottelier was an adjunct Lecturer at Harvard University (KSG) from 2001-2003 and at Georgetown University in 2004.
From 1970-1998, Dr. Bottelier worked at the World Bank. He was Senior Advisor to the Vice President for East Asia from 1997-1998, and Chief of the World Bank’s Resident Mission in Beijing from 1993-1997. Professor Bottelier held consecutive directorships for Latin America and North Africa from 1987-1993, was Division Chief for Mexico from 1983-1987 was resident Chief Economist in Jakarta, Indonesia from 1979-1983, and held various assignments as desk economist for East- and West African countries from 1970-1979.
Prior to the World Bank, Dr. Bottelier attended Amsterdam University and MIT and worked as Advisor to the Ministry of Finance in Zambia, was consultant to the UNCTAD on the global market for virgin and scrap on-ferrous metals, and held the position of Chief Economist and Marketing Director of the (then) Zambian State-owned copper company. Dr. Bottelier was also a Harkness Fellow of the Commonwealth Fund in New York and a Research Associate at the Brookings Institution.
Dr. Bottelier received his education at the University of Amsterdam and MIT. He has written numerous articles on China’s economy.
