China Making Strides to Improve the Environment

The State Environment Protection Administration (SEPA) announced plans to build three regional centers to more effectively supervise and protect the environment. These centers will be based in the northwest, northeast and southwest regions of China. SEPA also plans to add more staff and improve the public’s ability to inform the agency about environmental problems in there areas. This follows the two centers built in 2002 in Nanjing and Guangzhou.



Names & Technology

As parents become more creative with their children’s names, using obscure characters to distinguish their name from common surnames, the police are having a hard time keeping up. In 2004, China introduced identity card with microchips. These cards use software that has not been able to adequately handle rare names. To enter a name onto a computer, you must first write the name using Roman letters and then pick from a list of possible options. Since each word written in Roman letters has so many options, uncommon characters often do not appear. This means that individuals with rare names do not have accurate identification cards.



China’s Call-Center Race with India

While India still retains the bulk of outsourced call-center services, China is beginning to catch up. The highly educated workforce and low wages outside of the coastal region combined with the tax incentives and well developed infrastructure have made China increasingly attractive. Many of these call centers are located in Dalian because many locals there speak Japanese and Korean. Centers are now moving near China’s ‘silicon valley’ (Xi’an).
